Senator Graham responds to the situation, in which two were killed and one injured.
A group of four Americans was kidnapped Friday by armed men shortly after they crossed the border into Matamoros in Tamaulipas, Mexico. The four, in a minivan with North Carolina license plates, were said to be going to Mexico for a medical procedure. U.S. authorities believe there is a possibility the Americans were mistaken for someone else.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called the kidnapping “unacceptable,” and said law enforcement agents were working with Mexico on the matter.
Officials of the Mexican government reported Tuesday that two of the Americans were found deceased, one who is alive is wounded, but the fourth kidnapping victim survived without injuries. According to the U.S. State Department, a level 4 warning had been in place for that Mexican state, which warned Americans not to travel there due to crime and kidnapping problems.
South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, responding to the kidnapping, said he was prepared to introduce legislation that would “set the stage” for American military force in Mexico. He said it was time to “get tough” with the cartels and the Mexican government. “I would put Mexico on notice,” Senator Graham said. “If you continue to give safe haven to drug dealers, then you are an enemy of the United States.”
